Sell ! Sell ! Sell ! Why? Because you are good at it. You are a business owner/manager, and selling your products and services is what has made you successful. Think of your local television station as your next buying customer. You understand that marketing your product or service takes effort. The more contact you have and the more education you provide, the better chance you have of closing the deal. The same is true in television news. As a news reporter, an anchor and a news manager, my newsroom received dozens of calls or emails daily from people pitching their ideas. Many were professionals, hired by companies to provide Marketing or Public Relations. Others held government positions, worked for non-profits, were elected to public office or simply had a hidden agenda. All of them had something in common. They all had established relationships with the newsroom, and they all marketed their ideas. If it was not a timely news tip, the first contact usually arrived via email or fax, followed by a phone call to ask if we had received the email. Then the person requesting coverage would call a day ahead to remind us of the event. In the end, if we had the resources to provide coverage, we might decide to send a photographer just to avoid any further contact with the person calling!
